US drone strike kills 14-35 in eastern Afghanistan on Monday
January 23, 2013

According to provincial officials in the eastern Afghan province in Nuristan, US drones fired multiple missiles against the Kamdish District late Monday, causing “around 35” casualties, with others reporting at least 14 deaths in the strike. Local officials termed all the slain suspects.

Oddly, NATO officials insisted they had no information about any operations ongoing in the region, and they declined to speculate whether there was a strike at all, though not all drone strikes are necessarily coordinated through NATO.

The Kamdish District borders Chitral, Pakistan, which is part of Malakand. The region is near Pakistani militant positions, but is not specifically associated with any militant groups nor US drone strikes against them.

Nuristan Province has been contested repeatedly by the Taliban, with the Taliban setting up its own government and being the de facto rulers off and on for years. The US has redeployed troops since the 2009 withdrawal from the region, but the Taliban maintains a significant presence.

The groundbreaking move recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units. Panetta’s decision gives the military services until January 2016 to seek special exceptions if they believe any positions must remain closed to women.

However it opens hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war.

CARE PACKAGES FOR MILITARY DOGS - “No one can tell you a dog is man’s best friend like Alan Meeks. While serving in Vietnam, Meeks was saved twice by his German shepherd war dog, Artus — all within eight months…“I’m here today because of my dog. He was a good boy,” he said.”
A Vietnam Veteran named Alan Meeks is working along with a non-profit organization called the U.S. War Dog Association, Inc. to send care packages to military dogs overseas and to promote the dogs’ overall welfare. Meeks still remembers his dog, Artus, who saved his life on two occasions. Here’s more from the Kokomo Perspective:

The organization also works to send packages overseas to war dogs and their handlers and to buy equipment for the dogs.
“The military doesn’t always have all the equipment for military dogs. It just depends what unit they’re in, but we’ll buy cooling vests or goggles or booties for their feet,” he said. “We’ll also send out care packages with dog treats, dog toys, things like that.”
Last year, 16,000 packages were sent.

Military dogs in the Vietnam War era have a tragic history. Although some of the dogs were adopted, approximately 296 were killed in action, 600 died from medical issues, and over 2,500 ended up being euthanized. Today, advocates have succeeded in promoting legislation that ensures military dogs will not be put to sleep for unnecessary reasons. Republican Fundraiser Charged With Kidnapping, Raping Multiple Women
A high-profile Republican fundraiser who co-chaired at least one event for presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been accused of kidnapping and raping several women that he met online and at church.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that 37-year-old Gregory Peterson had been arrested on Wednesday and charged with 23 felonies and two misdemeanors. Charges included “nine counts of forcible sexual abuse, seven counts of rape, three counts of object rape, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, assault, burglary and sexual battery,” according to KSL. As of Thursday afternoon, we was still being held at the Salt Lake County jail on $750,000 bond.
Charging documents indicated that Peterson victimized a least four women, three of whom he met at an online dating site.
A fourth woman he met at a church function in 2011 agreed to go to a movie with him, but he allegedly forced her to go to his 3,000-square-foot cabin in Heber, Utah after telling her he had a gun. Peterson is accused of sexually assaulting the woman and hitting her when she didn’t follow his instructions.
He is also accused of threatening to report a woman he met online for having an expired visa. He then allegedly drove her to his cabin where she was raped and assaulted.
Peterson’s Facebook page showed a photo him meeting with Romney and indicated that he co-chaired at least one Romney fundraiser on Nov. 17, 2007, according to Talking Points Memo. ABC 4 obtained a photo of Peterson with his arm around a smiling Romney at another event.
Peterson owns Peterson Wealth Management and the online trading website Smartstocks.com. He also holds an MBA in Finance & Entrepreneurship from Brigham Young University.

A US plan to keep some combat troops and an effective air power in Afghanistan is having a positive impact not only on the internal situation but also Kabul’s neighbours, says a senior US diplomat. According to the plan, outlined recently in the US media, American troops will stay in Afghanistan until 2024 as Washington will not allow the Taliban to take over that country.

The Obama administration’s new Afghan policy, although already reported by various media outlets, has now also been confirmed by the outgoing US ambassador to Kabul, Ryan Crocker.

In two separate interviews to the US media this week; Mr Crocker made it clear that the American military — including some combat troops — will stay in Afghanistan for at least 10 years after the expected US withdrawal in 2014.

For the second year in a row [2009 & 2010], the U.S. military has lost more troops to suicide than it has to combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.   – Congress.org

Overall, the services reported 434 suicides by personnel on active duty, significantly more than the 381 suicides by active duty personnel reported in 2009.   – Congress.org

It’s frankly frustrating that with the level of effort that we’ve put out there, that we haven’t stemmed the [suicide] tide,” general George Casey, the Army’s top officer, told a House panel March 23, 2010 – Time.com

More  American  soldiers  are  now  dying  through  suicide,  rather  than  in  Afghanistan  combat.
